100% P&T VA Benefits: The Complete List of What You’re Actually Entitled To

Most veterans know the monthly compensation amount for a 100% rating. Far fewer know about the full ecosystem of federal and state benefits that P&T designation unlocks. This guide covers everything — because leaving any of these on the table is real money left uncollected.

P&T defined: Permanent and Total means the VA considers your conditions both permanently disabling and collectively rendering you unable to maintain substantially gainful employment. This protects your rating from routine reduction exams and triggers a broader benefit set than 100% schedular alone.

Federal Benefits Unlocked at 100% P&T

Monthly compensation (2026): $3,828.50 base (veteran alone). Higher with dependents.

Champva healthcare: Your spouse and dependent children under 23 qualify for Champva — comprehensive health insurance through the VA at no premium cost. This covers most medical expenses not covered by other insurance.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC): If you die from your service-connected conditions, your surviving spouse receives DIC payments — a monthly tax-free benefit currently at $1,672.64 base for 2026, with additional amounts based on dependent children and years of service.

Chapter 35 DEA benefits: Your dependent children and spouse qualify for Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA) — up to 45 months of education or training benefits.

VA home loan with no funding fee: P&T veterans are exempt from the VA loan funding fee (typically 1.4–3.6% of the loan amount). On a $400,000 home, that’s up to $14,400 saved.

Commissary and exchange access: P&T veterans and their dependents have access to military commissaries and exchanges — including online shopping — for significant savings on everyday goods.

National Park Service Access Pass: Free lifetime pass to all National Parks and federal recreation areas.

State Benefits Vary — Know Your State

State-level benefits for 100% P&T veterans vary significantly and can be substantial. Most states offer some combination of: full property tax exemption (Texas, Florida, and over 20 other states), state income tax exemption on VA compensation, free or reduced tuition at state universities for veterans and/or dependents, free hunting and fishing licenses, and vehicle registration fee waivers.

Check your specific state’s veterans benefits agency — the differences are significant. Texas P&T veterans pay zero property taxes. Florida P&T veterans get full property tax exemption on their homestead. California offers the Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption. Don’t assume — look up your state’s specific offerings.

VA Healthcare Priority Group 1

100% P&T veterans are in Priority Group 1 for VA healthcare — no copays for any VA medical services, including mental health care, prescriptions, and specialty care. This is essentially comprehensive healthcare at no cost.

What’s the difference between 100% schedular and 100% P&T?

100% schedular means your combined rating reaches 100% but may be subject to future reduction if your condition improves. 100% P&T means the VA considers your disability permanent — they cannot reduce your rating through routine re-examination, and it unlocks the full set of survivor and dependent benefits.

How do I get P&T designation?

P&T designation can be requested when filing your initial claim or as a separate claim if you’re already at 100%. The VA may also assign it automatically if your conditions are clearly permanent. Ask your VSO about whether your conditions qualify.

Does my spouse automatically get benefits when I’m rated P&T?

Not automatically — you need to register your dependents with the VA (Form 21-686c) for them to receive Champva, DIC eligibility, and DEA benefits. Do this as soon as you receive your P&T designation.
