Stop the Clock
Did you know that simply telling the VA you plan to file a claim can secure your start date for benefits? This is called an Intent to File (ITF).
If you are on the fence about applying, you need to submit an ITF immediately.
Why December Matters
If you submit an Intent to File in December 2025, you have one full year to gather evidence and submit your claim. If you win that claim in November 2026, the VA will pay you backpay all the way back to December 2025.
If you wait until January to file, you lose that month of pay forever. On a 100% rating, that’s over $3,700 lost because of a few days’ delay.
Don’t Rush the Claim, Just the Intent
A common mistake veterans make is rushing to submit a sloppy claim just to “get it in.” Don’t do this.
- Submit the ITF now. (It takes 5 minutes).
- Build the Strategy. Take your time to get Independent Medical Opinions (IMOs) and organize your records.
