A denial letter is frustrating, but it is also valuable. The VA must tell you exactly why they said no. Usually, it is one of three things:

1. No Event in Service.
2. No Current Diagnosis.
3. No Medical Nexus (The Link).

Understanding Procedural Options

The VA provides established pathways for veterans to provide additional information or request a review of a decision:

• Higher Level Review (HLR): A review of the evidence already on file by a more senior adjudicator. (No new evidence is permitted).
• Supplemental Claim: A review used when you have new and relevant evidence to submit (such as clinical documentation or a medical nexus letter).

Addressing Documentation Gaps

If you were denied due to a lack of clinical evidence, submitting the same records may lead to the same result. You may need comprehensive medical documentation that clearly addresses the VA’s clinical findings.
