You filed your VA disability claim — now what?
For many veterans, the silence that follows can feel just as stressful as the paperwork. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to sit in the dark.
The VA gives you multiple ways to check the status of your claim and understand what’s happening behind the scenes. This guide shows you how — and what each stage means.
Option 1: Use Your VA.gov Account
The fastest and most detailed way to track your claim is through your VA.gov account.
Here’s how:
- Go to VA.gov
- Log in using your DS Logon, ID.me, Login.gov, or MyHealtheVet credentials
- Click “View your disability rating and claim status”
- Select the claim you want to track
You’ll see:
- The current status
- A summary of submitted documents
- A timeline showing where your claim is in the process
✅ Best for: Real-time updates and full transparency
Option 2: Call the VA Directly
If you’re having trouble logging in — or just prefer to speak to someone — you can call:
📞 1-800-827-1000
(Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM ET)
A VA representative can:
- Confirm your claim status
- Explain delays or next steps
- Help verify that documents were received
✅ Best for: Talking through complex cases or asking about C&P exams
Option 3: Consult with Medical Professionals for Documentation
When seeking medical evaluations from providers like Woobie, our focus is on providing independent clinical assessments for your records. We provide medical-only services including:
- Independent Medical Evaluations (IMEs)
- Nexus letters based solely on clinical judgment
- Thorough documentation of symptoms and functional limitations
Our medical team focuses on providing the clinical evidence you need to document your condition accurately. We comply fully with SB 694 and do not assist with claim filing, tracking, or legal strategy.
✅ Best for: Veterans who need independent clinical documentation to support their medical records

Understanding Each Claim Stage
Once you log in, you may see your claim listed under different stages. Here’s what they mean:
🔹 Received
The VA has your claim and has assigned a date. Nothing’s been reviewed yet — but you’re in the system.
🔹 Evidence Gathering, Review, and Decision
This is the longest stage. The VA is reviewing records, possibly requesting a C&P exam, and building your case file.
🔹 Pending Decision Approval
Your claim has been rated — and is now being reviewed for accuracy by a second-level reviewer.
🔹 Preparation for Notification
The decision is finalized, and a letter is being created for you.
🔹 Complete
The VA has mailed your decision letter, and you can view it online. This means your claim has officially been decided.
What to Watch Out For
- Request for More Evidence: Don’t ignore it. Failing to respond can cause delays or denials.
- No-Show C&P Exam: Missing your scheduled exam can lead to a denial for lack of information.
- Stagnant Status: If your claim hasn’t moved in 90+ days, contact the VA or consult an accredited representative to inquire about the status.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Just Wait — Watch
The VA system isn’t always fast — but it is trackable. Knowing where your claim stands helps reduce anxiety, avoid surprises, and prepare for next steps.
