Surviving the C&P Exam: 5 Red Flags to Watch For

The Gatekeeper

The Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam is the most critical moment in your claim. A bad examiner can tank a perfect claim in 15 minutes.

5 Red Flags

  1. The “Speed Run”: If the exam lasts 5 minutes for a complex back issue, they didn’t do their job.
  2. No Goniometer: If claiming joint pain, the doctor must use a measuring tool (goniometer) to check range of motion. If they eyeball it, the exam is invalid.
  3. Ignoring the DBQ: If they don’t ask the questions on the Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ), they are guessing.
  4. “How are you doing?”: It’s a trap. If you say “Fine” out of politeness, they may write “Veteran is fine.” Answer with your worst day in mind.
  5. Hostility: If the doctor is dismissive or rude, do not engage.

What to Do if You Spot a Red Flag

Do not wait for the denial. Call the VA immediately (1-800-827-1000) and file a Memorandum for Record stating your exam was inadequate. Request a new exam.
