TDIU Pay Calculator 2026: What 100% Pay Looks Like When Your Rating Is Lower

Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) is one of the most valuable and least understood VA benefits. Veterans who qualify receive monthly compensation at the 100% rate — currently $3,831.30 per month for a veteran with no dependents — regardless of whether their combined rating is 60%, 70%, or 80%. For a veteran currently receiving 70% pay of $1,759.19 per month, TDIU approval represents an increase of $2,072.11 per month, or roughly $24,865 per year.

What TDIU Pays in 2026

TDIU pays at exactly the same rate as a schedular 100% rating. The 2026 rates, following the annual COLA adjustment, are:

Veteran alone (no dependents): $3,831.30/month

Veteran with spouse only: $4,042.94/month

Veteran with spouse and one child: $4,199.48/month

Veteran with spouse and two children: $4,356.02/month

Veteran with one child, no spouse: $3,986.70/month

Additional dependent children add approximately $93.76 per child per month. A veteran with a dependent parent adds approximately $180/month per parent depending on the specific circumstances.

TDIU vs Current Rating: The Monthly Difference

Here is what TDIU approval means in monthly income terms for veterans at different current ratings (veteran alone, no dependents, 2026 rates):

Currently at 60% ($1,395.93): TDIU increase = $2,435.37/month ($29,224/year)

Currently at 70% ($1,759.19): TDIU increase = $2,072.11/month ($24,865/year)

Currently at 80% ($2,044.89): TDIU increase = $1,786.41/month ($21,437/year)

Currently at 90% ($2,297.96): TDIU increase = $1,533.34/month ($18,400/year)

TDIU Eligibility Thresholds

TDIU eligibility under the standard (schedular) criteria requires one of two conditions:

Single-disability threshold: One service-connected disability rated at 60% or higher.

Combined-disability threshold: A combined rating of 70% or higher with at least one individual disability rated at 40% or higher.

Veterans who do not meet these thresholds may still qualify through an extraschedular TDIU referral if the facts of their case demonstrate that their service-connected conditions are “unusual or exceptional” in their severity and impact on employability. An accredited VSO can evaluate whether an extraschedular referral is appropriate for your situation.

The Employment Restriction

TDIU comes with a meaningful restriction: recipients generally cannot maintain substantially gainful employment. The VA defines substantially gainful employment as work that generates income above the federal poverty level in a competitive work environment. Marginal employment — income below the poverty line or work in a protected work environment like a family business or sheltered workshop — is generally permitted.

Reporting requirements: TDIU recipients are required to report changes in employment status to the VA annually via VA Form 21-4140 (Employment Questionnaire). Failing to report employment income while receiving TDIU can result in an overpayment debt and potential termination of the benefit. Be scrupulous about this reporting obligation.

How to Apply for TDIU

Apply for TDIU using VA Form 21-8940 (Veteran’s Application for Increased Compensation Based on Unemployability), which can be submitted through VA.gov, by mail, or through your accredited VSO. The form asks about your employment history, the nature of your service-connected conditions, and how those conditions prevent you from working.

Supporting evidence for a TDIU claim should include: medical records documenting the severity of service-connected conditions, a letter from your treating physician describing functional limitations and employability impact, employment records showing work history and any terminations or accommodations related to service-connected conditions, and if applicable, a vocational expert opinion on your residual functional capacity.

TDIU and Future Rating Increases

Receiving TDIU does not prevent you from continuing to add conditions to your VA claim or pursuing rating increases. Veterans on TDIU who later reach 100% schedular through additional ratings can have their TDIU replaced by a schedular 100% — which removes the employment restriction while maintaining the same pay rate. This is an important long-term strategy for veterans who want to eventually work without restriction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for TDIU while my initial claim is pending?
Yes. If you believe your service-connected conditions prevent substantially gainful employment, you can submit VA Form 21-8940 alongside your initial claim or at any time after you have service-connected disabilities meeting the threshold criteria.

Does TDIU affect my VA healthcare eligibility?
TDIU at the 100% rate typically places veterans in Priority Group 1 for VA healthcare — the highest priority group with the most comprehensive benefits and lowest or no co-pays. This is an additional benefit beyond the monthly compensation increase.

What happens to my TDIU if I go back to school?
Full-time student status generally does not constitute substantially gainful employment. Many TDIU veterans pursue education. However, working while attending school — if that work generates income above the poverty threshold — can affect TDIU eligibility. Report any employment to the VA.

Can I own a business while receiving TDIU?
It depends on the nature and income of the business. Active business ownership that generates income above the substantially gainful employment threshold can affect TDIU. Passive ownership or nominal involvement in a family business may be permitted. Discuss your specific situation with a free, accredited VSO before starting or continuing business activities.
